Once again, our country has suffered indescribable loss after a mass shooting in Las Vegas. The media has been quick to describe it as the worst mass shooting in US history. That is, since Pulse, which only happened last year. And before then, the most abhorrent of these happened at Newtown Elementary. So we know it’s only a matter of time until it happens again. And while this has been a quintessential American tragedy for the past decade or so, the reality is that it’s happening with more frequency in European cities as well.
No matter how modern our cyber security and closed circuit camera systems are, there is no way to ensure with 100% certainty that something like this would never happen in Tampa Bay. Think about that deranged man in Vegas. For the Mandalay Bay staff, he was just another regular guest.
Since we’re not going to stop living our lives for fear of similar events happening here, it would be a good idea to implement as many practices as possible to maximize our chances of survival.
So what can you do to protect yourself?
- Make it a habit to familiarize yourselves with every single exit when you visit any building.
- Look around for places where it would be easy to duck under or behind for cover;
- Although this is much easier said than done, if you’re ever in such a situation, try to remember not to run. A lot of people suffer severe injuries or die from being trampled on.
We’ve written before about how to upgrade your security systems, but when push comes to shove, sometimes we have to get ready for the worst. This is not any different from the fire drills we used to do in school when we were kids. This is not so far-fetched. This is our new reality. What are you doing to be ready?
